2018 Acura TLX vs 2018 INFINITI Q50

Serving Fort Worth, Dallas, and Arlington, TX

A compact luxury car is often the first vehicle in a luxury line that many people purchase, making it both a contested segment and a proving ground where automakers try to build brand loyalty as well. As a result, these are some of the most well-designed and well-executed cars that you can buy. Two strong competitors for the leading title in the segment are the Acura TLX and the INFINITI Q50. Both cars saw updates and improvements for the 2018 model year. So which car makes for a better purchase this year: the 2018 Acura TLX or the 2018 INFINITI Q50. We’ve pit these two compact luxury sedans up against another to see which one is the better vehicle of the two.

Features

A luxury car is simply not up to snuff unless there is a wide range of innovative technology, comfort and entertainment features available. Both cars have a very deep options list, but in terms of standard equipment, the Acura offers a better value. It offers a lot of the key features as standard equipment, including a full active safety suite including automatic emergency braking and blind spot monitoring. The INFINITI only offers a rearview camera as standard safety equipment. Acura also offers a more modern infotainment system. It is more streamlined and easier to use than the INFINITI one, and is equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone integration, which the Q50 does not offer at all.

Interior Styling

While the exterior styling of cars gets mentioned often, you spend a lot more time looking at the interior of your vehicle, which is why luxury automakers go out of their way to include high-quality and attractive materials. Here, the 2018 update for the TLX really shines, adding contrast stitching and higher-quality materials to the interior. The Q50 also has its share of premium materials, but they don’t blend with the rest of the car nearly as well. The large infotainment screens, for example, tend to clash with the wood-grain accents and many of the buttons and switches are obviously Nissan-sourced hard plastic, which shatters the luxury illusion that the INFINITI is building. This makes the Acura TLX the winner in the interior styling category.

Fuel Economy

Efficiency is increasingly a concern even for luxury vehicle drivers, and many manufacturers have taken great effort to make sure their cars are near the top of the class when it comes to this metric. The 2018 Acura TLX is near the top of the luxury midsize rankings, with 23 miles per gallon in the city, 33 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg combined* for its four-cylinder model. The V-6 is likewise efficient, returning 20 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, 24 mpg combined.* The Q50, on the other hand, falls around the average of the class, earning 23 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined for its four-cylinder model and 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined for its V-6 model. This gives the 2018 TLX the edge in efficiency as well.

The 2018 Acura TLX is a great entry-level luxury sedan, offering excellent standard and optional equipment, plenty of standard safety gear, solid fuel economy and a beautiful interior design.
